Exclusive: David Alan Grier on 'Arizona' role, 'The Cool Kids' and why he's glad he'due south NOT dating Kamala Harris

The player is prepping a new one-act serial "The Cool Kids" for FOX.

David Alan Grier is back on the large screen in the one-act/horror flick, Arizona. The quirky motion-picture show that's full of dark humour is a departure from the roles we're used to seeing Grier play. and that'south part of the reason he was interested.

"These are the kind of movies I desire to make. These crazy, dark comedies. It was really quirky and different," he said in an exclusive interview with TheGrio.

"I have always wanted to exercise that. People put y'all in boxes. I desire to get by all that. All actors, no actor I know, unless you lot're gonna pay me $twenty million a pop, wants to do the dame function over and over for xx years. We all became actors to come outside of ourselves and play unlike kinds of roles."

When he'southward not busy making movies similar Arizona and the upcoming Sprinter, he'southward fielding insults from his biggest critic, 10-yr-old daughter, Lulu.

"She got the last good sperm by the style. She just barely made it out," he joked. "She hates my bristles. I oasis't shaved in half-dozen months. She'south like, you wait similar a granddad! She's being very intolerant and age-ist."

Grier, 62, is sporting a mature look these days thanks to his office in the upcoming comedy serial The Cool Kids.

"Information technology's about the three of us who move into a senior living facility because it's cheap. Vicki Lawrence is like the bad daughter. She'due south the new girl who upsets our political balance. It's similar The Breakfast Lodge but with old, dusty ass people. Nosotros are very petty about everything in our lives. Who took my toothpick? Why are you wearing the aforementioned colour socks as me? It's all drama."

David Alan Grier says he picked up much of his old man attitude from his late mother.

"My mother, may she remainder in peace. She called me several times saying, 'Await, someone came into this business firm and took my styrofoam cups. There were 4 cups hither when I left."

"Oh my God. She was non kidding. She said, 'I don't care. I need to notice out who took them so that's what we are doing all 24-hour interval long.'"

The iconic funny human weighed in on the possibility of an In Living Colour reboot.

"We were trying. We tried to practice information technology in 2012 and they couldn't go it together. Everybody was down. The thing that happened last fourth dimension is they announced they were doing a reboot with a whole new bandage. I thought that would be the only mode to exercise it. Then anybody online started maxim they wanted the old cast. Nosotros were like, 'No, it'due south a new generation.' Merely they wanted to see us."

Grier says that he would be game for a reboot merely the clock is ticking.

"It was attempted, but I'1000 hither man. They ameliorate come up quick while I can nevertheless touch on my toes."

The actor also revealed that while some fans may recall In Living Colour was his biggest say day, they're sorely mistaken.

"I was on Madison Ave and this actually distinguished black human being said, 'Information technology must be hard for y'all now considering your show is gone.' I just nodded, simply I was thinking, 'Are you lot out your damn listen? I'm finally getting paid for once! They got us real cheap but it was so much fun. I was sent to the infirmary for an injury and that's the in one case I missed work. Every day was great. I have never laughed so hard in my life, off-camera," he said.

"I went on Jenny Craig once and Tommy Davidson, Kenan, Damon Wayans…they all went to the grocery store and bought kielbasas, steaks, craven, and put all this food into my bag. I picked my bags up later on shooting and all this food roughshod out. It was like that every twenty-four hour period. Yous could not come up in with an attitude or have a bad day considering we would exploit it."

Several of the skits featured on In Living Color were pretty risqué at the time and would likely never get in on the air today.

"With "Men on Motion picture," nosotros barely got away with it then. When the evidence was on, you could fax the network or phone call or write a letter. When "Men on Motion picture" was on, at that place was no Twitter or social media for that immediate response so we got away with a lot," he explained. "A lot of the gay terms that I stole from members of Dreamgirls were every secret at the time. They didn't know what nosotros were doing. It took a while for them to catch upwardly to us. We were ever a step alee."

The comedian as well took fourth dimension to share his thoughts on Kamala Harris, who recently snatched the edges of Supreme Court Justice nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.

Arizona is in select theaters and On Demand now. The Cool Kids premieres on September 28 on Fob.
